About the project:

The project “Creating Safe and Empowering Spaces with Women to Mitigate Climate Security Risks and Sustain Peace in Guinea-Bissau” aims to promote peace through the creation of sustainable and safe dialogue spaces where communities can discuss climate-related issues and collectively identify adaptation solutions that can be communicated in a more organized, participatory, and inclusive way to authorities at all levels of governance.

Rural women, particularly young women, are especially disadvantaged, facing significant multidimensional inequalities. In addition to limited access to civic spaces and educational, health, and social services, the livelihoods of rural communities are further challenged by the impacts of climate change. Consequently, the intervention focuses on women, who are the most affected by climate security risks and whose adaptive capacity is hindered by economic, political, cultural, and social barriers. The project’s geographic coverage focuses on three regions/sectors that are particularly vulnerable to climate-related conflicts: Gabú, Cachéu, and Quinara.

To leverage capacity-building activities, the project proposes the creation of gender-sensitive civic awareness tools within the scope of the intervention and the capitalization of these materials for awareness campaigns on climate security risks.

It is funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Objectives:

Contribute to the dissemination of information and awareness among target communities and their regions on topics such as women’s empowerment, women’s civic participation, climate change and mitigation of climate security risks, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding.
Develop inclusive and gender-sensitive civic awareness materials on women’s empowerment, women’s civic participation, climate change and mitigation of climate security risks, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding.

Methodology:

PELE establishes several core principles in its work in community arts practices, which are reflected in this proposal:
A collective creation model through participatory and collaborative methodologies;
Ethical and political alignment and commitment with the territories and groups involved;
Engagement and establishment of partnerships with local entities;
Promotion of reciprocal sharing and capacity-building processes with NGOs, technical staff, and artists.
